Description

This error typically appears when there's a conflict between client-side and server-side rules. 

Outlook supports two types of rules:

  • Server-side rules: Stored on the Exchange server and run even when Outlook is closed.
  • Client-side rules: Stored locally and only run when Outlook is open on that specific computer.

This message appears when:

  • A rule was created or modified locally and hasn't synced with the server.
  • There's a conflict between rules stored on the server and those on your local machine.
Resolution

Option 1: Let Outlook Decide

When prompted, Outlook may ask:

"Which rules do you want to keep?"

  • Choose either "Server" or "Client" rules depending on where the most accurate or updated rules are.
  • If unsure, choose Server to ensure rules work even when Outlook is closed.

  1. Go to File > Manage Rules & Alerts.
  2. Review the list of rules:
    • Look for any marked as (client-only).
    • Edit or delete conflicting rules.
  3. Save and close the dialog.

If the issue persists:

  • Export your rules (optional).
  • Delete all rules.
  • Recreate them from scratch, ensuring they are server-compatible.

Using the command line:

The solution for this error is to Run Outlook.exe /cleanrules to clear any hidden/corrupted rules in Outlook Desktop. Running this will also clear any current rules that are working. The individual will have to set up their rules again. (This is only recommended for IT Technicians)
