Error Message

Office upload error: "We’re sorry, someone updated the server version with edits that conflict with yours".

Description

This typically happens when you're working in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.) on a document stored in OneDrive, SharePoint, or Teams, and someone else has made changes to the file while you were editing it. Office tries to merge changes automatically, but if the edits conflict, it throws this error.

Resolution

✅ Option 1: Save a Copy

  • Click “Save a Copy” when prompted.
  • Office will save your version separately so you don’t lose your changes.
  • You can then manually compare and merge the differences later.

✅ Option 2: View and Resolve Conflicts

  • Office may offer a “Resolve Conflicts” button.
  • Click it to open a side-by-side view of your changes vs. the server version.
  • Accept or reject changes as needed.

✅ Option 3: Check Version History

  • In Word/Excel, go to File > Info > Version History.
  • You can restore a previous version or copy content from it.

✅ Option 4: Reopen the Document

  • Close the document and reopen it from the cloud location.
  • Office may prompt you to merge changes or discard local edits.
