'Files' Tab within Microsoft Teams is Renamed 'Shared'

The Files tab in Microsoft Teams channels is being renamed to the Shared tab, a change that combines content from the channel's document library and files shared in posts into a single, unified location. This new Shared tab will have two views: "In library" for existing file and folder functionality, and "In posts" to display files and links from channel posts. The change is a permanent rollout happening in stages and will also apply to the Files tab in chats, which has already been renamed. 

What is changing

• Name change: The Files tab in Teams channels will now be called the Shared tab.
• Unified content: It will bring together files from the channel's document library and those shared in channel posts, making them viewable in one place.
• New views:
  • "In library": This view retains the existing functionality for working with files and folders from the channel's SharePoint document library.
  • "In posts": This new view shows all files and links that have been shared directly in the channel's posts.
• Consistency with chat: The Shared tab is a consistent experience with the one already present in individual and group chats, which was renamed from Files. 

When is this happening

• The rollout for channels is a gradual, multi-stage process. Previous updates have already occurred, and the rollout for channels is happening between mid-April and late November 2025, depending on the specific release schedule.
• The change will be implemented automatically for most users on desktop versions of Teams for Windows and Mac.

• Affected groups: All MCC Microsoft Teams users.
• No admin action needed: The change will happen automatically and requires no administrative action.
• Duration of impact: This is a permanent, Microsoft-driven change.
• Update documentation: You may want to notify users and update any relevant documentation to reflect the new name and features. 

 

The existing Shared tab in chats will not be affected by this change. Users can also work with files and folders in the Microsoft SharePoint document library linked to the channel.
