Requesting an Email Address - Distribution List Versus Shared Mailbox

Summary

Article explains the differences between a distribution list and a shared mailbox versus an email alias.

Body

Question

Is an email alias the same as an distribution list or a shared mailbox?

Answer

No, an email alias is an alternate email address that can be used to direct mail to another mailbox already configured.  MCC does not offer secondary or vanity aliases to personal or departmental email accounts.

A distribution list is not a mailbox, when someone sends an email to the list such as email1@mccneb.edu , it forwards that email on to everyone in the list. You can make someone the owner of a distribution list where they can add and remove users that receive email to that list.

If you open the address book in Outlook any mailbox (shared or otherwise) will have the icon of what looks like one person, a distribution list will have the icon of what looks like a group or two people.

A shared mailbox is a single point of location where a number of users are granted access to it and they go to that location to get the email. Individuals are not owners of a shared mailbox.  An IT request must be submitted and IT Support Services will grant the requested access.
